LIMERICK--

Acantha

by Carole Lyons

Thought Apollo, Acantha he'd win,
But the nymph, fighting back, scratched his skin.
Her Greek name was born
From akantha, a thorn.
Now acantha's a spine or sharp fin.

Acantha, according to one version of this Greek myth, was a beautiful female wood nymph who resisted the advances of the sun god Apollo. (In another version, Acantha was male and eagerly returned Apollo's love.)

POEMS--THE GREEN MAN by William Anderson

BOTANY--

SUMMER GREEN MAN

by Jessica Galbreth

THE GREEN MAN
William Anderson

Like antlers, like veins of the brain the birches
Mark patterns of mind on the red winter sky;
"I am thought of all plants," says the Green Man,
"I am thought of all plants," says he.

The hungry birds harry the last berries of rowan
But white is her bark in the darkness of rain,
"I rise with the sap," says the Green Man,
"I rise with the sap ," says he.

The ashes are clashing their boughs like sword-dancers,
Their black buds are tracing wild faces in the clouds;
"I come with the wind," says the Green Man,
"I come with the wind," says he.

The alders are rattling as though ready for battle
Guarding the grove where she waits for her lover;
"I burn with
desire," says the Green Man,
"I
burn with desire," says he.

In and out of the yellowing wands of the willow
The pollen-bright bees are plundering the catkins;
"I am honey of love," says the Green Man,
"I am honey of love," says he.

The hedges of quick are thick with may blossom
As the dancers advance on the leaf-covered King:
"It's off with my head," says the Green Man,
"It's off with my head," says he.

Green Man becomes grown man in flames of the oak
As its crown forms his mask and its leafage his feature;
"I speak through the
oak," says the Green Man,
"I speak through the
oak," says he.

The holly is flowering as hayfields are rolling
Their gleaming long grasses like waves of the sea;
"I shine with the sun," says the Green Man,
"I shine with the sun," says he.

The globes of the grapes are robing with bloom
Like the hazes of autumn, like the Milky Way's stardust;
"I am crushed for your drink," says the Green Man,
"I am crushed for your drink," says he.

The aspen drops silver of leaves on earth's salver
And the poplars shed gold on the young ivy flowerheads;
"I have paid for your pleasure," says the Green Man,
"I have paid for your pleasure," says he.

The reedbeds are flanking in silence the islands
Where meditates wisdom as she waits and waits;
"I have kept her secret," says the Green Man,
"I have kept her secret," says he.

The bark of the elder makes whistles for children
To call to the deer as they rove over the snow;
"I am born in the dark," says the Green Man,
"I am born in the dark," says he.

POEM NOTES--

Many species of Fraxinus, the ash trees, exude a sugary substance, which the ancient Greeks called méli, "honey". The species of ash in the mountains of Greece is Fraxinus ornus, Manna-ash. The Meliae were nurses of the infant Zeus in the Cretan cave of Dikte, according to Callimachus, Hymn to Zeus. They fed him honey.

Of "manna", the ash-tree sugar, the standard 19th-century US pharmacopeia,The Dispensatory of the United States of America (14th edition, Philadelphia, 1878) said:

"It is owing to the presence of true sugar and dextrin that manna is capable of fermenting...Manna, when long kept, acquires a deeper color, softens, and ultimately deliquesces into a liquid which on the addition of yeast, undergoes the vinous fermentation."

Fermented honey preceded wine as an entheogen in the Aegean world.

The Green Man's Song

by 'Dancing' Jim Wetherspoon

Before you laid your tracks or daubed your houses;
or the drove the furrow hard across the world,
I danced alone beneath the spreading branches,
and sang away the winter's clinging cold;
spelling sap to rise and the buds to quicken,
and lithe green shoots to spring from out the mould.

Wry masons and woodcarvers called me to them,

when spires were raised to match my tallest trees;
they set my leaf-mask leer on arch and lintel,
and grinning out from between the pimply knees,
of dozing friars, on bum-worn misericords
to mock the preacher's dry solemnities.

But I'll fetch home the summer from the green-wood;

the trees & flowers unfolding to my song;
leaf-canopied; ablaze with twisting ribbons;
I'll call from hearth and plough the merry throng.
And on the winding green, with pipe and tabor,
I'll lead you all a fine dance, the summer long...

LYRICS-- Song From The Wood(1977) Velvet Green -Jethro Tull

Velvet Green

Jethro Tull

Walking on velvet green. Scots pine growing.
Isn't it rare to be taking the air, singing.
Walking on velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Distant cows lowing.
Never a care with your legs in the air, loving.
Walking on velvet green.
Won't you have my company, yes, take it in your hands.
Go down on velvet green, with a country man.
Who's a young girls fancy and an old maid's dream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north.
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth.
Where the scent of wild roses turns the milk to cream.
Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
And the long grass blows in the evening cool.
And August's rare delight may be April's fool.
But think not of that, my love,
I'm tight against the seam.
And I'm growing up to meet you down on velvet green.
Now I may tell you that it's love and not just lust.
And if we live the lie, let's lie in trust.
On golden daffodils, to catch the silver stream
that washes out the wild oat seed on velvet green.
We'll dream as lovers under the stars ---
of civilizations raging afar.
And the ragged dawn breaks on your battle scars.
As you walk home cold and alone upon velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Scots pine growing.
Isn't it rare to be taking the air, singing.
Walking on velvet green.
Walking on velvet green. Distant cows lowing.
Never a care with your legs in the air, loving.
Walking on velvet green.

LYRICS-- Song From The Wood(1977) Jack in the Green -Jethro Tull

Jack in the Green
Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)

Have you seen Jack-In-The-Green?

With his long tail hanging down.
He quietly sits under every tree
in the folds of his velvet gown.

He drinks from the empty acorn cup

the dew that dawn sweetly bestows.
And taps his cane upon the ground
signals the snowdrops it's time to grow.

It's no fun being Jack-In-The-Green

no place to dance, no time for song.
He wears the colours of the summer soldier
carries the green flag all the winter long.

Jack, do you never sleep

does the green still run deep in your heart?
Or will these changing times,
motorways, powerlines,
keep us apart?
Well, I don't think so
I saw some grass growing through the pavements today.

The rowan, the oak and the holly tree

are the charges left for you to groom.
Each blade of grass whispers Jack-In-The-Green.
Oh Jack, please help me through my winter's night.
And we are the berries on the holly tree.
Oh, the mistlethrush is coming.
Jack, put out the light.

BOOKS-- Tree of Souls: The Mythology of Judaism by Howard Schwartz

Permalink: http://amzn.com/0195327136

Review:

The "Tree of Souls" is most marvelous since it facilitates repaired souls to descend, and thus they are not only a source of renewed life and knowledge but also the symbol of the never-ending cycle of re-creation. Whether it is the mysterious tree of Abraham described in this book, or maybe the sacred glistening tree under which the Buddha sat and meditated, or a different mythical tree of perfection from another tradition, suffice it to say that these trees, in different ways, are subject to many interpretations and explanations. It is hard not to succumb to the magic of storytelling, particularly of this storyteller who retells these magnificent tales in his own incomparable way. Thus this tree of narratives will always flourish and remain a source of enjoyment and knowledge to those sitting under its branches ...

MYTHOLOGY--

NORTH_WIND

Of the four chief Anemoi, Boreas was the north wind and bringer of cold winter air, Notus was the south wind and bringer of the storms of late summer and autumn, and Zephyrus was the west wind and bringer of light spring and early summer breezes; Eurus, the east wind, was not associated with any of the three Greek seasons.

Boreas was the Greek god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter. His name meant "North Wind" or "Devouring One". Boreas is depicted as being very strong, with a violent temper to match. He was frequently shown as a winged old man with shaggy hair and beard, holding a conch shell and wearing a billowing cloak
